Dan has been playing the trumpet since age of five. His love of Jazz began his sophomore year in high school. Larry McDonough, student teacher under Robert Stacke, first showed him a lead sheet. It was a copy of "All Blues"; it was a very basic but interesting piece of music. Still today you will here him pull out that music -- and the thing of it is, each time he pulls it out, it is very different. Each rhythm, each phrase, each solo section, each player plays his own style of musical phrases, which is what makes "The Cooker" love this music we call "Jazz". He first got the idea of starting this band in early 2007. Then in 2020, Covid hit, so there were no gigs. So, he got on an arranging and writing streak, and the rest is how this band, "Mill City Six" got its start. He plans on bringing the band to Lima Peru, where he knows of this fine missionary, Jose Antonio Delgado, who will make the band famous in Lima. But then he also plans to bring the band to New Orleans -- stay tuned for this, because, for both trips, there will be a chance for the fans of "Mill City Six" to go along with the band on the "Trip of a Lifetime".
Jim Tenbensil goes back to Daniel's years at Edison High School, where Edison's Director, the late Dr. Robert Stacke, sent Daniel and Laurie Hines (Praetorius), to the University of Minnesota High School Music Honors Program. Jim Tenbensil taught at that program; he taught music theory. Jim is a terrific teacher of music -- all kinds of music - from trombone to music education, Jim is probably one of the greatest teachers the Twin Cities has ever seen. There is hardly a musician in the cities that has not heard of Jim Tenbensil.
David Perry is one of the best friends that Daniel could ever have in the music industry. He goes way back to the "University Marching Band", as well as the "Wind Ensemble", and Jazz Ensembles, under Dr. Frank Bencriscutto. David's "Percussive Style" ranks him up with the top percussionists in the Twin Cities. His creativity is nothing short of spectacular. If you ever get bored at one of our "Gigs", just watch David for a while - he'll get you smiling.
Bruce (Pooch) Heine is one of Daniel's long time friends - goes back to "University of Minnesota Marching Band" days! He played trombone then. He has developed into one of the Twin Cities finest double bass players. He provides a rhythm and an understanding of how to make you feel the music!
Christopher D'Ascenzo is a great friend of Daniel's, and he goes back to "Jazz Ensemble" at the "University of Minnesota". He has performed in a number of groups that Daniel has played with, and he has really honed his skill as a musician. If you think he is a good Soprano Sax player, you should hear him on Tenor Saxophone. Maybe if you listen long enough, he'll bring it to a "Gig", and he'll play it for you.
